Many people have hobbies that fall into the realm of collections. People often assume that their collections are automatically covered in their blanket homeowner’s policy, but this is not generally the case.
Homeowner’s insurance is primarily designed to protect the structure of the house and only incidentally insure the contents contained inside. The usual method for this to happen is to set a fixed value for the contents that is designed to be in keeping with most people’s ordinary household property and personal possessions. Having a two million dollar collection of toy train engines from the 1800s is not going to be included in such a policy.
In order for the hobbyist to make certain that his collection is properly protected against loss, he needs to perform several additional steps beyond keeping his regular homeowner’s policy in force. The first requirement is to obtain a professional appraisal of his collection and back it up with a video inventory of it. This creates proof of the collection and a certifiable value of it.
With this information in hand, the collector contacts his insurance company and arranges for a new policy endorsement to be added to his blanket coverage. For a small additional sum added to the annual bill, the insurance company specifies that the value of the collection is added in on top of the traditional contents coverage. In the case of particularly valuable collections, the company may insist upon a set of proper security measures before agreeing to add the endorsement to the policy.
In any case, however, insurance is the way in which people make certain that a lifetime of pleasure invested in a collection does not suddenly get wiped out, never to return.
